Working it out: Adrenalin

There are many problems associated with anxiety and depression. Most of which can disable so much of your life so it is perhaps ironic that one if the biggest problems for sufferers is also a life saver for others.

Adrenalin !  Defined in the dictionary as

  1. a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal medulla in response to stress and increases heart rate, pulse rate, and blood pressure, and raises the blood levels of glucose and lipids. It is extracted from animals or synthesized for such medical uses as the treatment of asthma. Chemical name: aminohydroxyphenylpropionic acid; formula: C9H13NO3 US name: epinephrine

The rush that the adrenalin buzz brings with hyped up anxiety followed by the all consuming, hide under the duvet low, can totally disable you. Yet adrenalin can be a life saver restarting a heart or giving a patient a much-needed kick-start. So if that hyped up anxiety was used to good effect physically would that help to control the low?

I tried out a theory of mine today. I knew my anxiety levels were high so I decided to try and use that adrenalin and hit the gym at Western Tennis to try to work it off.  Now before I go any further let me say that I can only try out this theory because I know the gym at Western Health and Racquets Club well. I feel safe there and knowing that GymGuyMark is around means that should anything happen I can get help quick.  So all I did was use the running machine for a power walk then both types of bike for a cycle and guess what? I am shattered! The adrenalin buzz has gone and it appears I have put it to good use as I feel physically tired in a good way.

I have now tried out this theory twice and it has worked both times, will let you know how I get on the next time it happens!
