Rocking and rowing in black!

Today was a tough day for several reasons, it was one of those days when you just want to stay in bed, haul the duvet over your head and only come out when you need to refill your coffee mug. I had the day off as I had a few personal things to do, not all pleasant! List all ticked off, speech done and only soaked once, I was home quicker than I thought. But I made the classic mistake of getting home, switching the kettle on and sitting down. Two hours later I woke up, frozen, still with my coat on, as stiff as a board and with a banging stress headache so that duvet was beginning to look very very inviting. I would normally have jumped in the shower, shoved on my pj’s and slobbed out for the afternoon but in the back of my brain there was a little voice that said get to the gym, go for a walk, do something. It was fighting a losing battle because someone had switched off my motivation switch.

So it was a very weird that about an hour later I found myself at the Western Health and Racquets Club Gym, AC/DC blasting in my ears. Why? I have no idea, somewhere between the shower and the kettle, I found my motivation to go knacker myself and since most of the day had been uncomfortable, I decided why should the treadmill be any different. I put my speed up to 6.7 and kept it there for my whole 30 minute session. I even stayed at that speed when I put the incline up and boy oh boy did my legs feel it. After a few stretches I went onto the rowing machine. I did three five-minute sessions taking a minute break in between each, the old chesty cough had started up again! The arms and legs were knackered by this time but thanks to a quick blast of Living on a Prayer I made it and did exactly what I had unconsciously set out to do. I had blasted the stress out of the day.

What all that rock and rowing today made me realise is that there are a lot of things in this life that we need to face alone, very often difficult things. No one else can sort your head out or truly motivate you to reach your goals if the motivation does not come from within you. Sorry but no amount of quotes, photos, diets, healthy eating plans or speeches by gurus will work. In the end the one person we all need to rely on is ourselves, have the “team” behind you to help and encourage but you are your biggest cheerleader. So a day that started out in black stayed in black but it was a rock n rowing black, and that can only be a good thing!
